Developing the Next Generation of
Location-Based Gaming

Building the Future of Crypto Gaming by combining AR, NFTs, and Real-World Exploration

Client:  Debris
Role: UX/UI, Visual design, Web design
Design team:  Vincent Sun, Mira Ivanova

Project overview

Debris is a mobile crypto game that combines location-based augmented reality (AR) technology, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and real-world exploration and connection. Players can play for fun and play to earn.

Gameplay
The core gameplay of Debris involves players collecting Debris, occupying Junctions with Debris to mine in-game tokens, and defending/attacking Junctions. In Debris, Junctions are energy fields formed around alien debris that were scattered across the planet when a deep space comet broke apart upon entry into Earth's atmosphere. Players collect debris (NFTs) in the real world and band together to claim Junctions, which yield tokens (Naki) to the users and battalions that own them.

The map of Debris is based on real-world geography, enabled by location-based service (LBS) technology and augmented reality (AR) technology. This allows users to interact with their surroundings through their phone camera. Junction generation is based on user location statistics, and players can propose and vote on where junctions should be placed. This offers unique opportunities to partner with location-specific events and offer location-based promotions.

Debris is a strategic game with community engagement in its DNA. It has the potential to penetrate non-crypto users and achieve viral spreading with strong geographical bonding potential. The synergy between social elements and LBS game, user stickiness through social interaction with geographic proximity, and unique opportunities to partner with location-specific events make Debris an exciting new addition to the mobile gaming world.

The social attribute of Debris AR+LBS brings players a brand-new 'social+game' experience that breaks the barriers of pure online or pure offline, which could reconstructure online and offline layout and attract popularity for offline businesses.

Visual Identity

We came up with the visual style to be used for the game and for all brand materials, such as the marketing website for the game, and the pitch deck.
The style was defined as futuristic sci-fi, mystical cyber city, and mystical.

The game

Enabled by AR+LBS technology and leveraging NFTs, the core gameplay involves players collecting DEBRIS in-game assets with GEAR, occupying junctions with DEBRIS to mine NAKI tokens, defending or attacking junctions with clan friends, and earning real-life benefits based on your Debris territory.

You can start playing by scanning the map for Debris, and after you find one you can start following the map to walk close to the Debris.

Once you reached the Debris, you will have to break it's shield in order to collect it. Once the shield is broken, you can successfully pick the DEBRIS and collect it in your warehouse.

Webpage

The webpage was created to introduce the project to new users and it tells the story of the game. The web design of the page follows the narrative of a comet called Lilith that fall on planet Earth and is Debris are to be collected and saved.
